First Street Opera was founded in 2010 as a group of independent professional opera singers to sing at Caffe Frascati during South First Fridays in Downtown San Jose. Co-Organizers Amy Mendon and Melissa Mallory took over leadership of the group in 2013. First Street Opera has since grown, now singing also at Bel Bacio cafe in San Jose's Little Italy, Slafe Face Coffe & Tea in Fremont, as well as booking for gigs around the South Bay Area.
First Street Opera is very proud to be an organization headed and run by women. In the times of #yesallwomen, they are committed to being a collaborative collective of professional opera singers that respects and empowers singers of all genders equally.
First Street Opera is committed to making opera accessible to the masses in a manner that is relevant to our times. Opera is a timeless art that speaks to our human experiences. Even pieces that were written hundreds of years ago are relevant today. It speaks to our experiences of love, loss, friendship, revenge, jealousy, and more. Our goal is to interpret the old pieces so that modern audiences can understand this, as well as bring in newer pieces. Every singer with First Street Opera is passionate about their art and committed to this goal.
Our Vision
A stronger opera presence in the mainstream culture of Silicon Valley
Our Mission
Expose mainstream audiences to authentic opera performances
